Which hat to wear? As mums we have to juggle so many roles: childcare expert, nurse, negotiator, cleaner, cook, counsellor, event organiser, picker-upper of clothes, policewoman, and creative designer of last minute costumes.. The list goes on! And this is before you add your non-parental roles as an employee, businesswoman, manager, consultant, wife, friend, daughter, sister etc.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could get off the treadmill once in a while and find some space to just think? Once Upon a Time, there was a Mum Called Lucy…

I’d like to tell you a story about a woman called Lucy. Lucy isn’t her real name and I have changed a few of the details about her life to maintain client confidentiality. Lucy contacted me with the words “I don’t know which way is up!” She was working four days a week, and felt guilty about this. She wasn’t sure that she’d made the right decision about her career, which she loved, but it all just seemed too difficult trying to juggle demands at work with trying to be “a good mum”. Lucy knew that she was her own worst enemy because she felt that “things need to be perfect, I need to be in control of everything and I have to hold it together – because I need to be there for everyone else”.

Lucy told me that she wanted to feel better about her job and feel better about herself as a parent. Se wanted to have more “me time” and she felt that she was taking her husband for granted and wanted to re-ignite the spark in their relationship. Lucy also wanted to declutter the house because the mess was getting her down but she felt that she was always running from behind with the housework and the household admin. But how could she do this after a hard day at work and the 2 nd shift of getting the kids fed and in bed? Lucy was so tired and didn’t know where to start. In her words, she was “running on empty”.

But just three months later Lucy was a different woman. She had made contact with a couple of old friends, enjoyed three date nights with her husband, she had started exercising and was excited and energised about a new project at work. She said she felt “much more relaxed and confident” about being a mum to her children and the house was clutter-free!

Nothing major had actually changed in Lucy’s life to bring about these changes – she hadn’t won the lottery, given up work or achieved great spiritual enlightenment: Life hadn’t suddenly slowed down so that she could catch up. The difference that made a difference to Lucy’s life was having her own coach to speak with three times each month (that coach was me, in case you were wondering!).

Each week Lucy and I would talk about things like whom she wanted to be and what she wanted to achieve in the next week. Our coaching calls created that much needed quiet space for Lucy to have some quality thinking time and find answers easily, whereas before she only had questions. In between calls you’ll have "fieldwork" to progress the learning. The calls will take place on Tuesday evenings at 8pm (hopefully younger kids will be in bed and older kids will be sorting themselves out by that time!) I want you to come to the calls and r-e-l-a-x! This is YOUR time! You can come with your dinner and eat it whilst you listen (the first 20 to 30 minutes will be me talking so you can listen and munch away whilst I mute the call).
